Three Cane Whale

From their unusual band name, through the choices of instruments (bowed psaltery anyone?) and enigmatic song titles to the music itself, multi-instrumentalist trio Three Cane Whale are clearly not a band to be constrained by the standard music rules.

Their eponymous debut album is a mesmerising collage of jazz, alt-folk and acoustic lo-fi rumblings that plays out like the soundtrack to a particularly obscure French arthouse film. Recorded live at an 18th century Bristol church this is an album where themes and sounds are repeated, revisited and reworked throughout to help deliver a beautiful, fragile and utterly absorbing collection of music that is one of those rare beasts, an album that needs to be played through from start to finish.
