Tips 2012: FOE

Along with Tribes, Hannah Clark, AKA FOE, is the fastest of our Tips out of the blocks next year with her debut album Bad Dream Hotline, out January 16th on Vertigo Records. We've had a listen and it contains everything that made the Hot New Trash EP explode over the internet back in April - check out the ferociously brilliant 'Tyrant Song' below - along with added extras that you might not have expected from the suburban punkette. We were excited enough to tip her and intrigued enough to make sure we caught up with her to find out more.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into music?

My parents are big music fans, so I grew up in a very musical household. I seem to specifically remember a lot of Nick Cave, Blur, a lot of world music, and for some reason George Michael?! My dad plays too, and always encouraged me to make music. We used to play Beatles' songs on guitar together. My dad is responsible for getting me into some of my favourite music. He used to give me CDs to listen to all the time, including my favourites: Nirvana and PJ Harvey.

Who are your influences?

[Kurt] Cobain, PJ Harvey, Thom Yorke, Portishead.

Can you tell us what to expect from your debut album? Is your Hot New Trash EP a strong indicator?

The album is a lot more refined, and whole. Two tracks from the EP are on the album - 'Tyrant Song' and 'Genie In A Coke Can' - because I still feel they are relevant, but the album is not all as intense as those songs. It's a lot more varied in terms of my writing styles, for example, there is a ballad on it, which is actually one of the most important and personal songs on the album for me. Really it's a proper introduction to FOE.

What ranks as your career highlight so far?

I would probably say recording the album at The Doghouse studio in Henley. Just me and Entrepreneurs locked away for a month making music in really beautiful surroundings; I could have stayed there forever. The owner Barrie (previous Jethro Tull drummer) who I now consider a good friend, was full of great stories and made the whole experience.

Who will you be watching in 2012?

Anything that Jack White is involved with, The Kills, Thom Yorke. Hopefully someone new will come along that I like.

What are you hoping 2012 will hold for you?

I'd love to be playing some shows around Europe, and maybe some festivals, but really as long as I still have to time to write music, I'll be happy.
