Tips 2012: Random Impulse
Here at TMF Towers, we know we don't often give hip-hop much coverage due to a general apathy among our writers, but Random Impulse, AKA Jovel Walker, changed all that when he came blasting out of our speakers with his brand of hip-hop/drum and bass/rock blend, finely seasoned with a touch of indie. Recent EP No Sleep For Winners cheekily charmed us with its cautionary tales of putting a night out on a credit card, and we reckon the charts and dance floors are set to be equally charmed. So before he bursts out of the underground into the big wide world, we had a quick chat with him and you might be surprised by the outcome.
Can you tell us a little bit about how you got into music?
It was a bit of a weird one. I was really into animation, drawing and spent most of my time reading manga and watching anime. It was only when I heard Jay-Z's Blueprint 2 album that I really started listening to music let alone making my own. There was something about that album that connected with me.
Who are your influences?
As I got into music so late, the amazing thing is that virtually every band and artist before 2003 is brand new to me so it's all a kind of amalgamation of old and new. Acts like the Queens Of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Jack White, Blur, Eminem and Kanye are all virtually brand new in my world so I'm catching up on a lot. Feels like I was in a coma for years and only just woken up!
Can you tell us a bit about what to expect from your debut album?
A genuine hybrid of grime/hiphop and indie rock. I like to think my last two EPs are tasters of the sounds I'm playing with for my first album.
You were on this year's MOBO Ones To Watch list and have toured with the likes of Professor Green, but what ranks as your career highlight so far?
I think following through with my own ideas, no matter how unorthodox, and going from playing 100 capacity shows to playing to a sold out audience at Shepherd's Bush Empire, all off of my own back is a definite highlight. The journey so far has been the most exciting thing for me so far, more so than any particular event I'd say.
Who will you be watching in 2012?
Ooh. I'm not sure. Everyone! I'm always on the net snooping around, listening to what people are up to. I'm watching you all! [laughs]
What are you hoping 2012 will hold for you?
More shows, two super secret projects, a few big collaborations and a debut album!
Random Impulse's as-yet-untitled debut album is out mid-2012. Find out more about him at his official blog - randomimpulses.wordpress.com
