Introducing... Jamie N Commons
Listening to 'The Preacher', from the EP The Baron, you would be excused for thinking that the man behind it was as wizened and wise as the beautiful baritone booming out of the speakers, and not a 22-year-old expat American currently residing in South London. Already turning heads with his remarkable music, and having just made the BBC longlist, Jamie N Commons was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few of our nosy questions.
You were born in the UK but raised in Chicago - has that influenced the way you approach making music?
Yeah, for sure. There’s a different rhythm out there, in the language, in the lifestyle…it gets inside of you. Although I am English, I believe my soul’s currently floating somewhere above the mid-Atlantic.
Are you from a musical background?
I am indeed. Been working real hard recently though so hopefully I’ll make the musical foreground soon.
What prompted to you move back to the UK?
Hula Hoops, subtle humour and the weather.
Your EP The Baron as released in October. Any plans to bring out a full album in the future?
Yes sir! We’re gonna be putting out a single first though early 2012. We're looking for the right producer before we start the album proper.
Who are your musical heroes?
Lord Rockingham's XI, Billie Holiday and Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt-kickers.
Which musicians would you love to work with?
Anna Calvi, Dr John, Black Keys, Gregg Allman… This could be a long list. I like working with people; music is a social activity.
Christmas is fast approaching, how do you plan to celebrate it?
Me and my grandma go to Vegas every year. Man, she loves those slots.
What are your plans for 2012?
Play loads more shows. Get the name out there. Got a few headline shows to announce soon - you should come - got some very exciting support tour offers in the pipeline as well so yeah, lots of shows. Oh, and getting the hell out of London before the Olympic apocalypse reigns down this summer. Fuck. That. Shit.
Jamie N Commons' EP The Baron is out now.
