The Cure - Bestival Live 2011
Let’s start with a few simple facts: The Cure are a brilliant band both live and on record; this double CD of their performance at Bestival has a cracking selection of some their best tunes from over 30 years in the business; and the profit from this release will benefit the Isle Of Wight Youth Trust. All good so far and when you listen to the album it is clear that The Cure are a band still at the peak of their powers with songs and arrangements that are fit for any occasion.
The only problem is the sheer length of the damn thing: with 32 songs clocking in at 2 1/4 hours, it is a test of endurance that would surely beat all but the most hardcore fans. Heaven only knows how people standing in a field on the Isle Of Wight coped without the ability to hit the pause button and nip off for nice a cuppa or a much needed slash. That said, there can be no faulting the music (well, perhaps with the exception of the ludicrous lyric change to set closer ‘Killing Another’ (sic)), with a brutal ‘One Hundred Years' and a playful run through of ‘The Lovecats’ being particular highlights. Although unlikely to win over any new converts, Live At Bestival shows The Cure to be in fine fettle - but is an album probably best listened to in shorter bursts.
