Various - Disco Heaven 01.05

The latest Hed Kandi compilation is billed as "a glittering selection of the sexiest funky house and U.S. Garage", so you'd be right in expecting a brashly commercial and uplifting sound.

At its worst, this means dodgy dance cover versions of songs which were pretty dodgy in the first place (Jacko's Man In The Mirror, Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere). Fortunately, these are balanced out with such punchy tracks as Pink Is The Colour, StoneBridge's Take Me Away and a double helping of Michael Gray. His mix of Be My Friend is an infectious gem and the original version of The Weekend included here is so much better than the one plaguing the airwaves as I write.

Disco Heaven 01.05 is unlikely to go down well with dance snobs, but, if you prefer glamour over grit, style over sweat, diva vocals to dirty beats, it should more than do the trick.
