Kieran Hebden / Steve Reid / Mats Gustafsson - Live At The South Bank

Recorded in 2009, the year before legendary drummer Steve Reid died, Live At The South Bank finds this trio on captivating form.

It's a modern freeform jazz album: six lengthy tracks (split over two discs), Reid's powerful drumming mingling with Hebden's abstract electronic noises and Gustafsson's wild, dirty saxophone. As with Hebden's dance work as Four Tet, the best tracks show a fine understanding of build and tension, though here they often climax in bursts of chaotic noise. Not for everyone, but fans of out there improvised music, or any of the individual players, are unlikely to be disappointed.
