Various Artists - IOTDXI
In recent years, R&S have once again shown themselves to be at the cutting edge of new electronic music, helping propel the careers of renowned young producers like Pariah, Untold and even James Blake. What better time then to re-launch their compilation series with the two-disc IOTDXI.
While the first disc undoubtedly features some special tracks, including the stunning ‘CMYK’ which still proves to be one of James Blake’s best tracks, and the dark dub-styles of Pariah’s ‘Orpheus’, it’s clearly the second disc of unreleased material that needs the most attention. Lone's ‘Cobra’ mixes his trademark retro synth stabs with frantic beats and space-age melodies, while ‘Ralph’ from London-based producer Bullion bathes in hazy chillwave vibes and distorted percussion. Perhaps most interesting is the Oneohtrix Point Never remix of the aforementioned Pariah track, turning it into a mutant video-game sound track. IOTDXI handily compiles all that’s been good about the label in the past 18 months into one package, along with some unreleased gems to sweeten the deal.
