Currently working on his debut album with producers including Fabien Waltmann (Will Young), White Nerd (Loick Essien) and Ant Whiting (Paloma Faith) and with his debut single 'Mr. General' out at the end of next month (November 28th), we felt it was the perfect time to introduce you to 21-year-old London-based singer, songwriter, producer Archeo (pronounced Ar-Kay-O, fact fans).
It's fair to say he's had a diverse upbringing: born in Bombay, he moved to Hong Kong for five years before studying at an American school in Nigeria and settled down in London at the age of 11. We're not exactly fashion connoisseurs here at TMF - shocking, we know - but we're told that this upbringing is reflected in his style.
Dapper. In search of trying to find some more out about him, and potentially some fashion tips as well, we had a brief chat with Archeo so that you'll be able to unleash a factoid when you hear him invade the airwaves over the next month.
What's your earliest musical memory?
My earliest memory was when I sang R. Kelly’s 'I Believe I Can Fly' for a music show-and-tell at school. I remember some other kid had also prepared the same song. Rest assured, I trounced him on that long note at the end.
If you could hold a recording session with any five artists, who would you choose?
You want to describe your music to a stranger on the street, who do you compare yourself to?
Pretty tough one, but no one in particular really because I won’t limit myself musically. On the other hand, I think there is some sense of familiarity in it all.
You are going to live on a desert island for a year, which three albums do you take with you?
Bobby Brown – Don’t Be Cruel
Kanye West – Late Registration
Usher – 8701
Everyone has a defining music moment, one that lives on in the memory, what is yours?
At eight, I scored the lead role in a musical called 'The Music Man'. It’s about a con man that travels around duping people into buying musical instruments before skipping town with the cash. Anyways, in the curtain call, the response I got from about 300 people in the crowd was an unforgettable feeling.
What is the best gig you've ever been to and why?
Jay-Z at the Royal Albert Hall. It was an inspiring performance not so much in its spectacle, but Jay-Z’s delivery and how he sounded exactly like on record. That is something to strive towards for sure.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Playing shows around the world, learning more about other cultures, and making great records.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, what is the most embarrassing track or album that we'd find?
Will Smith - 'Willennium'
How would you sell your new single 'Mr. General' to us?
It is a braggadocios jam about confrontation. It’s also just less than 3 minutes long, so it won’t take up your day.
What's next for Archeo?
Big shit poppin'.
'Mr. General' is out on November 28th through Archeo's own label Mantra Records. To find out more about Archeo, visit his official site - www.archeoofficial.com.
