Evanescence - My Immortal
Evanescence are one of those acts that raise questions. How involved were they in the Christian music scene? Was that shouty bloke on Bring Me To Life listening to the same track as the rest of us? The most important question was, of course, whether they could survive the huge success of their debut single and consistently deliver.
My Immortal is an attempt to prove that they aren't a one-trick pony, a piano and stings tinged ballad more reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan than, say, Hole. Showcasing their sensitive side is no bad thing, and, if the track is successful (released on December 1st, it's sure to fit with the dark, cold winter nights) it might ensure their future is assured as a far more diverse act than their previous singles had suggested.
All of this might be moot, however, as NME have reported this very day that their guitarist, Ben Moody, has walked out. On this showing, it would be something of a shame if this means the end of a band with a lot of promise.
