Cass McCombs - Not The Way EP
Not The Way is a collection of six songs from Cass McCombs, a songwriter from the wacky town of Baltimore whose live shows are allegedly passing into legend as you read this. Indeed, John Peel has described him as "Unobtrusively brilliant" so what's the EP like?
In short, it's very nice. Cass has a mellow, smooth as silk voice that eases its way under your skin in a very agreeable sort of way. It's almost reminiscent of Leonard Cohen with a smattering of Roger Waters, especially on the slow, spacey Opium Flowers; a song that meanders it's way through your head along like a river of sweet treacle. Indeed, your hands might just feel like two balloons after listening to this one when in the 'right frame of mind'.
None of the songs on here are very complicated. The arrangements are almost unobtrusive in their construction, serving only to act as a frame of sorts for Cass's vocals. They are simple, folksy, acoustic affairs, but there's something rather dark behind them. Listen to the lyrics on Nobody's Nixon, "I'm not paranoid/but I tape record every phone call I can/...I spend my life fighting off regrets" Elsewhere, It's Getting Colder, seems to be written about dying, "But I've only got myself to blame" all rolling along to a honky-tonk piano playing at 16RPM.
It's all very slow and relaxed; nobody could dance to this, it's more the sort of songs to fall asleep to and that's not a terrible thing at all. And, what's more, he's on tour as well, short and sweet, but he is venturing outside That London:
