Pain Of Salvation - Road Salt Two
Swedish prog-rockers Pain Of Salvation have returned with the second part in their Road Salt duo of albums, the first part seeing Daniel Gildenlow and company cease the irritating genre-crossing of recent albums and move into some rather brilliant classic-rock territory. Number two is very much in that same vein, though they do embrace their progressive roots just a tad bit more.
The urgent and bombastic opening track ‘Softly She Cares’ is rather appropriately the most readily similar to anything off the previous opus, and about as rocking as the Swedes get with its huge bass lines and angry grooves. Later on however it all goes a little bit epic, with space-rock passages running through ‘Eleven’ and off-kilter riffs building up around frantic string arrangements and Gildenlow’s powerful vocals on the eight-minute ‘The Physics Of Gridlock’. It’s good to hear Pain Of Salvation sounding so invigorated these days and these two albums are testament to that.
