Falloch - Where Distant Spirits Remain

When considering Falloch's guttual moniker, as well as the album artwork and the label on which When Distant Spirits Remain appears, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was some kind of grotty black-metal album. In reality, this Scottish duo have crafted an album full of darkened melody, soothing atmospherics as well as blast beats and furious riffing.

Taking their name from the Falls of Falloch waterfall in Crianlarich, there’s a definite organic feel to the album as it mixes razor-sharp guitars, expressive vocals and even a bit of flute as on the stunning ‘Beyond Embers and the Earth’. The build up of ‘Where We Believe’ is about as monumental as they come, descending into searing deathly screams and post-rock crescendoes during its ten minute duration, while the string-laden prog-metal journey of ‘The Carrying Light’ expertly blends classic rock soloing with a gothic ambience. Falloch have the ability to melt hearts and rip them apart in one track alone.
