Bill Orcutt - How The Thing Sings

If you’ve ever wondered what the sound of a person brutalising an acoustic guitar would be like, then Bill Orcutt's latest full length How The Thing Sings is the album for you.

Revered as an incredibly unique player, Orcutt takes his six-string and mangles it beyond comprehension, so much so that you can almost hear the fearful tension in the strings as they are stretched to their limits. Compared to his previous collection, A New Way To Pay Old Debts, there is some noticeable melody seeping through as on ‘Lost They Book’ where the guitar begins as delicate as Orcutt ever allows it to become, or the title track where you can hear the man serenading himself behind huge acoustic chords. Still there’s plenty craziness on offer and it’s unlikely you’ll hear an unplugged guitar the same way ever again.
