Various - School Reunion - The Smoochies
The 80s - is there any decade which provokes such extreme responses of love and hate? Playing to now-adults with some nostalgia for (circa) that period is the whole School Reunion phenomenon, and, with Valentine's Day just around the corner, what better than to take 'that person of a certain age' (i.e. those old enough to know who Pepsi and Shirley were, and young enough to have cared at the time) back to the school disco, or, more precisely, the last dance, where hopefully there would be some payoff for those teen urges?
From ubiquitous big ballads to cod reggae, the trouble with this material is the obvious emotion and drippy production. These are the sort of songs which, long ago, when it was possible to do such a thing, refused to budge from the number one spot for eight weeks; rather like the floater that just won't flush down the pan. The only major surprise here is the omission of that Bryan Adams tune.
Still, with 80s MOR sampling seemingly the in-thing (check out Stay With Me Till Dawn, Mylo fans) this isn't totally without interest, but those with a pathological fear of big hair and 'Choose Life' t-shirts are warned.
