The Ladybug Transistor - Clutching Stems

The brainchild of Brooklyn-based Gary Olson, The Ladybug Transistor have long been a vehicle for some of the most charming and emotional indie-pop. Clutching Stems continues that tradition, albeit with a slightly different line-up, including Kyle Forester of Fortuna Pop! label mates Crystal Stilts. The album gets off to a warm and dreamy start with the title track, before ‘Light On The Narrow Gauge’ carries on through acoustic guitars, infectious melodies and vocal harmonies. A sense of modest grandeur even creeps in on ‘Caught Don’t Walk’, as horns, strings and piano in a track that has an almost theatrical feel to it. Each song may follow a fairly similar pattern and distinctive sound, but it’s hard to find much fault with it when The Ladybug Transistor take such obvious in care in crafting each track. Clutching Stems is a solid and at times enchanting work.
