Various Artists - I Love Comedy

Where do you start with something like this? 62 tracks of wildly disparate comedy, everything from bits of vintage comedy like Fawlty Towers and The Two Ronnies, mix with much more recent pieces from the likes of League Of Gentlemen and snippets of Dead Ringers.

The problem is that it *is* so wildly disparate both in vintage, quality and style. Does anyone really think that the Chicken Song from Spitting Image is funny? And what's it doing next to something by Billy Connolly? Isn't "Goodness Gracious Me" by Peter Sellers now
considered in poor taste?

What's the point of two and a half minutes of One Foot In The Grave? With a lot of this material, context is everything, and here it's reduced to pointless soundbites. It's good in patches, notably the bits that were stand alone anyway (particularly Dead Ringers) but overall it's unsatisfying, offering insubstantial glimpses that often aren't all that funny on their own.

It's like one of those lunchtime Radio 2 shows at weekend that compile a few comedy bits on a theme to fill a half hour, extended over three full compact discs, except there's no theme. Maybe you'll find something new here, but there's nothing on here that anyone with a vague interest in British Comedy hasn't heard a hundred times before.
