Hefner - Dead Media (Reissue)
marked eccentric British indie-rockers Hefner's final studio outing and also the one that would divide most opinions with its heavy reliance on electronics. Reissued here in double disc format, it does sound a tad dated with regard to the synth sounds on offer, but if anything this is what gives it its charm. Darren Hayman’s uniquely nasal vocals spout romantic lyrics over squishy beats and innocent sounding keyboards on ‘When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines’, while his more delicate side is emphasised on the dreamy ‘China Crisis’ where he is backed by Amelia Fletcher of Talulah Gosh and Tender Trap fame on vocals. What’s undeniable is that Hefner had a unique and enchanting sound and while perhaps not their finest hour, Dead Media is the sound of a band who were always willing to explore new territory. The second disc features a host of tracks including cuts taken from the Hefner Brain EP, which carries on the love for electronics, and various remixes and radio sessions. A splendid package!
