She Keeps Bees - Dig On
Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant deliver a disappointing follow-up to 2009 debut Nests. The NYC duo, all smoky vocals and swamp-blues guitar, have much going for them in the way of pose, mood, atmosphere. On paper, I'm in. No issues with the approach, but it's the songs that stomp on their promise. Opener 'Saturn Return' broods with laudable menace, Larrabee's voice genuinely flecked with soul and gravitas. But the album's profile is pancake-flat, a procession of mid-tempo blues lacking in both individuality and invention. It's all very studied and the compasisons to PJ Harvey really do flatter them. Dig On doesn't journey far enough into the heart of darkness to beguile or intrigue.
