Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Revelling in its gloriously fuzzy and lo-fi sound, Unknown Mortal Orchestra's debut album is a short but sweet journey. Launched with a highly limited seven inch single earlier this year, songs of which appear on this very disc, Ruban Nielson’s solo project isn’t likely to blow people’s minds but it does present a set of hazy, psyche-pop nuggets that touch on primitive beat-making and sixties garage-rock. ‘Thought Ballune’ is a perfect example of the latter, full of bouncy guitars and sunny melodies, while ‘How Can You Luv Me’ takes that even further into pop territory with a strong bass line and a brilliantly catchy chorus. Latter tracks like ‘Strangers Are Strange’ and ‘Boy Witch’ may seem a little superfluous when they don’t really go anywhere, but this is otherwise an intriguing and enjoyable debut. Having put together a live band, it will be interesting to see where Unknown Mortal Orchestra end up.
