Knifeworld - Dear Lord, No Deal
Featuring members of Chrome Hoof and North Sea Radio Orchestra, and masterminded by Kavus Torabi of Cardiacs and Guapo, Knifeworld are a very enticing prog-rock proposition. Having released their debut album in 2009, Dear Lord, No Deal is the first proper recording as a full band and if you like quirky, off the wall prog, this will be right up your street. Opening track ‘Pilot Her’ is a juddering and heavy little explosion of razor-wire riffs and sharp bursts of horns, definitely bearing more than a little mark of Cardiacs on its sound. The pun-tastic title track is another short one, taking in acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies and textural synths. The mammoth 14-minute closer ‘HMS Washout’ is where the band really gets to stretch themselves, building through swirling keyboards and urgent vocals courtesy of Torabi and former Cardiacs vocalist Melanie Woods into chaotic bassoon and rolling percussion. A full band has done wonders for Knifeworld’s sound, allowing Torabi’s vision to be fleshed out and given far greater depth. Bring on the next full-length!
