Von D - Daydreaming
On first listen, Parisian Von D might sound like another artist taming dubstep for the masses. His debut album, despite the bass wobbles, for the most part smooths away the genre’s rough edges. Tracks such as 'Love Music' and 'Watching You', with their sensual female vocals, are as much indebted to soulful garage. 'ASAP' is dubstep by way of lounge jazz, xylophone providing the hook, while 'Push It' is chilled drum ‘n’ bass. When the tougher stuff turns up – the grimey 'Maximum Bass', the 3 a.m. techno-influenced 'Booboodoo' – it almost seems shockingly out of place. Daydreaming falls very much on the light side of dubstep, but is very much its own beast rather than a sell out.
