Mama's Gun - The Life And Soul
Mama's Gun's follow-up to their 2009 debut Routes To Riches demonstrates a similar disregard for soul-funk clichés. The Life And Soul keeps an eye on the groove and one foot on the gas. The preference for keeping it loose-limbed and funky rather than falling back into dreary balladry is a plus. Beverley Knight shows up for duet 'The One' and a thumbs up for MG leader Andy Platt's clean, effortless vocals and the uncluttered, live-sounding production. A point docked, however, for the cover of Queen's 'Bicycle Race', which is neither funny nor inspired re-working.
