Trentemøller - Late Night Tales
Trentemøller increasingly seems to be indulging the gothy, David Lynch-worshipping side of his personality, moving away from the dancefloor productions that made him famous. His addition to the Late Night Tales series is akin to a trip down his own lost highway. It’s mainly dark stuff, from the thick, stoner rock of The Black Angels’ 'Science Killer' through the classic (if over-familiar) 'Venus In Furs' to an instrumental, atmospheric piece from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’ soundtrack to The Proposition. Papercuts and M. Ward, however, bring some acoustic light relief, while Eden Ahbez’s 'Full Moon' is a dreamy piece of narration over xylophone and croaking frogs that should send you off to sleep with no nightmares. There’s also new material from the great Dane himself in the form of a grinding, so-so cover of Chris Isaak’s 'Blue Hotel'. Ultimately, this release satisfies those two criteria of an accomplished mix; it takes you on a journey and leaves you with a list of artists to investigate further.
