Various - Now 59
It's easy to criticise compilations like Now 59, but it's also easy to see why the series has such enduring appeal amongst the music-buying public. The line-ups on each CD may read like a who's who of the Smash Hits Poll Winner's Party or CD:UK, but quite simply, if that's your thing, then the Now series represents terrific value for money.
Blue, McFly, Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating and Daniel Bedingfield all feature along with other disposable pop alumni such as Busted, Darius and Rachel Stevens, but the Now series is a relatively broad indicator of who's currently hot. Hoobastank's surprise hit "The Reason" makes an appearance along with "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5 to keep the rockers happy, while the Scissor Sisters, Libertines and Embrace fly the indie flag. Smash-hit dance anthems "Call On Me" by Eric Prydz and Deep Dish's "Flashdance" are also present along with stellar R&B representation from Nelly and Kelis.
Lambasting Now 59 for being the musical equivalent of McDonalds would be as pointless as taking an eight-year-old to dine at The Ivy. This compilation, like McDonalds, gives them what they want, and at least saves the buying parent a few quid in the process.
