Sound Of Rum - Balance
Formed at a London squat party, Sound Of Rum play a suitably edgy blend of funk, jazz and rock, as much Red Hot Chili Peppers as The Cinematic Orchestra. Undoubtedly their biggest selling point is front woman Kate Tempest and her breathless rapping. Think a fired up Speech Debelle after a heavy night on booze and fags; Tempest’s voice somehow manages to be sandpaper rough while also retaining an element of feminine vulnerability. It can be hard to follow her words at times, though rest assured her rhymes are at the more intelligent end of the spectrum, a mix of psychological boxing and commentary on broken lives. It’s not surprising that Roots Manuva and Scroobius Pip are on record as fans. Balance (their debut) won’t be to all tastes, but those looking for a truly alternative take on UK hip-hop should give it a spin.
