Various - School Reunion - The Disco
Ah, those halcyon school days. After presumably spending their whole time in class wishing they weren't there, some people clearly wish they could go back. Otherwise, nostalgia wouldn't be the huge industry it is. But given that School Disco and Friends Reunited have already released numerous compilations of similarly themed '80s hits, there's no real need to release School Reunion - The Disco.
Still, this three-CD set is as comprehensive as any, with the strains of "Gold" by Spandau Ballet and "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" particularly recalling crap school discos at my own Deyes High school, Maghull, where Mr Gorman from IT would DJ rather ineptly whilst using the mic to shame couples from snogging the face off each other. Although Chesney Hawkes' "The One And Only" - the classic school disco anthem - makes a welcome appearance on disc three, there are one or two bum notes for my generation at least. For instance, Simple Minds' "Alive and Kicking" reminds me more of the original Sky Sports ad campaign rather than Mr Gorman's set at the annual Christmas disco, and quite what "I Could Be So Good For You" by Dennis Waterman is doing here is anyone's guess.
But despite such trivialities, almost every tune you ever recall hastily taping off the radio is probably featured on "School Reunion - The Disco" and although this compilation is nothing new, it's a lot more enjoyable than Mr Gorman's attempts at DJing ever were.
