Gisli - Sheperds Bush Empire
Gisli is a man capable of extracting a wry lyric from the most mundane of circumstances. His album, How About That? was one of the unsung highlights of the year and, we are very happy to say that if this live performance is anything to go by, 2005 could well see a lot of people getting on the Gisli bandwagon. Gone, however, are the beats from the album, and live, Gilsi is a lot more like a rock band than you might think. Songs like 'Can You Make Me Right?' and 'Go Get 'Em Tiger' are performed with guitar shaped gusto and aplomb. Think 'Pavement' fronted by 'Beck'. It sounds good and it is good.
It's something of a testament to his skill and charisma that Gisli manages to make this, a support slot in a sold out venue, feel like a headline slot from the word go. It helps that he's so instantly accessible and creates a warm, involved atmosphere. It also helps that he doesn't have one duff song in his entire repertoire and, if anything, this set seemed way too short. Go and see Gisli as soon as you get a chance. That's an order.
