Various - Power Ballads 3
Just who is it that buys the Power Ballads series? Sales reps that pop into Newport Pagnell services and end up buying a copy along with some Scotch eggs? Or bored housewives who wander into the audio/visual section whilst doing the weekly shop in Asda?
Whoever it is, also of interest to me is who actually compiles these dire compilations. "Little By Little" by Oasis, "Something Inside So Strong" by Labi Siffre or "The Final Countdown" by Europe may be many things musically but in my book, they aren't power ballads.
Of course, the appropriate usual suspects like Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler and Tina Turner all appear on this third volume of the Power Ballads series, while the appearance of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and Air Supply's "All Out Of Love" also adhere rigidly to the album's theme.
Even though Virgin is clearly stretching the power ballads concept a little thin with a third volume, the only surprise is there's no Bon Jovi or Whitesnake on it. Still, give it time. There's bound to be another volume in time for next Christmas and until then, this will no doubt fly off the shelves in Newport Pagnell.
