Marques Toliver - Butterflies Are Not Free

An interesting mix of styles that never quite fully gels together is what awaits you on Marques Toliver's debut EP. Almost impossible to pigeon-hole, Butterflies Are Not Free traverses the likes of RnB, classical and pop in its four tracks to mark Toliver out as a unique voice, even if he hasn't quite honed his craft yet. Opener 'Charter Magic' is the biggest misstep, a sprawling epic of repetitive verses and delicate percussion that over-indulges long before its six minutes are up. EP stand-out 'Sitting Up In My Room' rescues matter though and shows what Toliver can achieve with a bit of restraint; smooth guitars give way to luscious violins that combine with Toliver's silky vocals to craft a track that is as emotive as it is soaring. Promising.
