James Apollo - Born Lucky
In six short years, prolific Americana troubadour James Apollo has produced a sizable back catalogue but only one album, 2010's Til Your Feet Bleed, has reached these shores. To help fill the hole for UK punters comes Born Lucky, a brief collection of hand picked tunes from previous releases. Kicking off with the sweeping ‘All Loves Pilgrims’, you are reminded of the great Jim White at his best but, unfortunately, that is as good as it gets. Perhaps it is the fractured nature of the collection but, although meandering along pleasantly enough, there isn’t really anything that reaches out to grab you and that is a shame as Apollo clearly has plenty of talent. In this global age, a search for the original albums and EPs may prove more rewarding than this lacklustre release.
