Various - Teachers 4: Top of the Class
The soundtrack to the fourth series of Channel 4 show Teachers is a lesson mainly in indie-rock, mixing the popular with the obscure, fresh acts with those longer in the tooth.
Representing the old guard are Ash and a solo Tim Burgess; neither have lost the ability to knock out a decent song, even if the sparkle has somewhat gone. What a Waster from band-of-the-moment (at least according to the NME) The Libertines is pleasingly sweary, even if the title has a whiff of irony, while Killcity's catchy Just Like Bruce Lee may awaken memories of Sleeper. However, the best new group featured is The Concretes, whose Seems Fine is a marvellous blast of horn-pop, and, along with Kings of Convenience's lovely Misread, a good indication of the quality of Scandanavian music at the moment.
On the downside there's the annoying Stacy's Mom, just a couple of notches up from Busted, not to mention Jayhawks sounding like Crowded House. It's occasionally reminiscent of that teacher who tried to be hip (yet fell slightly short), but this compilation has enough decent tunes to make it worth a purchase for indie kids and 'fans of the series' alike.
