The Death Set - Michel Poiccard

Before work commenced on this, The Death Set’s second album, one founder member, Beau Velasco, died of a drug overdose. Hence it mixes infectious blasts of Beastie Boys-style noise (see lead single, 'Slap Slap Slap Pound Up Down Snap') with more reflective moments. 'I Miss You Beau Velasco' pits a poignant melody and hazy vocals against wall of sound guitars; 'It’s Another Day' too seems to be dealing with loss, but as a defiant three minute punk anthem with a “Hey! Hey!” chorus. There are also songs about anal sex ('I Like The Wrong Way') and taking ecstasy, although thankfully you’d only really know this from reading the press release. Michel Poiccard, named after a character from À bout de soufflé, sounds chaotic at first, but contains enough carefully blended pop hooks to have it deserve the ears of a wider audience than it will probably reach.
