Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx - We're New Here

Jamie xx’s re-working of Gil Scott-Heron’s 2010 album I’m New Here fits in with the current vogue for moderately challenging electronica (see also recent works by Radiohead and James Blake). In Jamie’s hands, 'Home' and 'NY Is Killing Me' become dubstep and 'The Crutch' drum ‘n’ bass. It’s an intriguing, self-consciously cult-ish project that for the most part pushes Scott-Heron's vocals and thoughts to the background. Only on a couple of tracks does it become exactly catchy and promise any listening longevity; 'Ur Soul And Mine' gains a loved-up vibe due to the incorporation of a sample from Rui Da Silva’s 'Touch Me', while I’ll 'Take Care Of U' is the tune that any self-respecting Ibiza sunset DJ will have in their record box this summer. Its combination of house beat, ethnic guitar line and grizzled vocal screams Balearic classic.
