Cowboy Junkies - Demons: The Nomad Series, Vol.2

Demons is Cowboy Junkies’ second instalment in their four-part Nomad series. Whilst first outing Renmin Park was patchy, this release may just be the best thing they’ve ever done. The Canadian four-piece are renowned for their easy-going style which has maintained a cult following but failed to trouble the upper echelons of the charts for over a decade. Here, they’ve chosen to cover Vic Chestnutt tracks and openers ‘Wrong Piano’ and ‘Flirted With You All My Life’ are done very much in the Junkies’ laid-back, comfortable-listening mood that you’d expect. Each successive song, though, seems to get deeper and darker as they build a fitting mausoleum to Chestnutt’s poignant lyrics. By the time you ease into penultimate tune ‘We Hovered With Short Wings’, the whole experience has become mesmerising and a progressively downbeat album has been turned unto an uplifting slice of Americana. Demons will surely do the band no harm commercially, leaving old fans and new converts eagerly awaiting future releases Sing In My Meadow and The Wilderness.
