Crowbar - Sever The Wicked Hand
If you didn’t know any better, you might think that Down was Kirk Windstein’s sole priority and considering that band's popularity in recent years, you probably wouldn’t hold it against him. Yet Crowbar are back with Sever The Wicked Hand, and it does not disappoint. At times buried under a wave of bands much more popular than themselves, yet all of them professing a reverence for the band, it must be frustrating for them to not have grown in the same way. What Crowbar have in lieu of that is skull-crushing riffs, and the knowledge that they were the progenitors of the sludgy hardcore they peddle which this new album has in spades. ‘Liquid Sky And Cold Black Earth’ is a devastatingly heavy beast of a track, replete with Kirk’s gruff roars and poignant lyrics. With a new Down album on the horizon, it’s likely this album won’t get the attention it deserves. A shame considering how brilliant this is.
