Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Live

Bubbling live set from the Talking Heads offshoot, commanded by husband and wife rhythm section Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. With David Byrne now seemingly irretrievably ensconced within his own back passage, the less cerebral, but ultimately more groovy, Tom Tom Club continues to pay the bills for the pair. Tremendous late 80s chart-denter 'Suboceana' remains their stand-out track but fans will thrill to the inclusion of early hits 'Wordy Rappinghood' and 'Genius Of Love'. A healthily warts-and-all recording adds to the appeal and frisson is added by both time and location of recording - New York City, 2001, just days after 9/11. Ultimately, grooves take precedence over hooks and its clear that, a few gems aside, songwriting was not TTC's strongest suit. Fanboys of old, of course, can put this all aside and drift away on hazy dreams of Weymouth, armed with bass, blond bob and trademark alluring intensity. Grrr.
