Hercules & Love Affair - Blue Songs

Hercules & Love Affair's second album continues in the same disco-house vein as their self-titled debut. Given the much publicised oddness of the five core band members, it’s a disappointingly mild experience overall. There is nothing as outstanding as their earlier Antony Hegarty collaboration 'Blind', but Blue Songs is nevertheless occasionally diverting. This time round the most famous guest is Kele Okereke; given he’s explored dance territory both in Bloc Party and as a solo artist, the backdrop of jackin' beats and 80s style vocal hiccups doesn't come as a huge surprise. Yet, like recent single 'My House', familiarity makes it no less agreeable and it’s bound to spark waves of nostalgia in some. The final track, a beautiful, beatless cover of 'It's Alright' (originally by Sterling Void and already covered by Pet Shop Boys), perhaps leaves you with a better lasting impression of the album than it truly deserves.
