Robert Francis - Before Nightfall
Before Nightfall, second album from American troubadour Robert Francis, is quite cool and not even the twangy country touches can put me off. Francis has a beautiful evocative baritone that could seduce even the most cynical listener. Produced by Dave Sardy (Band Of Horses, Johnny Cash), the songs are all lovely lonely snap shops of small town Americana. 'Darkness' waltzes in sweet and timid followed by the excellent little rocker 'Junebug', Francis' voice spiraling up to a spine-tingling falsetto in the chorus. The songs are lush but never over-produced with Sardy wisely giving Francis and his wonderful pipes centre-stage. 'Climb A Mountain' and the spooky 'I Like The Air' are fine examples of the genre-crossing tunes Francis is very adept at writing. With the current Folk-boom sweeping the world it is certain this young man will have no trouble carving his niche.
