Engel - Threnody
Swedish quintet Engel step up their game on their sophomore effort Threnody. The rampant record sees the metal mob, who made a name for themselves with their debut release Absolute Design, take their strident sound one step further. Adeptly amalgamating gut-wrenching growls, calm and composed clean vocals, meticulous melodic guitars and destructive drumming, Threnody sees the Swedes offer listeners an eclectic mix of heavy and soft metal. Album opener ‘Six Feet Deep’ superbly showcases both sides of the band’s sound and provides punters with vicious and violent verses as well as a cool and catchy chorus. ‘To The End’ is another song that displays Engel’s diversity, the tasty tune flaunts frontman Magnus Klavborn’s vast vocal range and features a powerful progression from acoustic to electric guitars. Other highlights from the 11-track record include fiery ‘Feed The Weak’ and atmospheric ‘Perfect Isis’. Engel have done themselves proud: Threnody is a strong and solid follow-up release. If you like your metal intricate and imaginative, then this record is most definitely for you.
