Cee Lo Green - The Lady Killer

Cee Lo Green’s third solo album, his first since becoming a household name as singer in Gnarls Barkley, looks to black music’s past rather than its future. Lead single 'Forget You' certainly sounds like an instant classic and is even better in its original incarnation as 'Fuck You', included here as a bonus track. One suspects the record company won't have trouble finding future singles: 'Bright Lights Bigger City', which cheekily blends a 'Billie Jean' style groove with 'You Only Live Twice' style strings, and 'Wildflower' are irresistibly feelgood and catchy. Of course, Cee Lo’s generous voice is the main star, whether dismissing an ex and her new lover or singing a big musty ballad that could have come from Stax ('Old Fashioned'). It’s all proof that you don’t need the latest production techniques to make a fine MOBO album in 2010.
