Bot'Ox - Babylon By Car
French electronic duo Bot’Ox map out slightly different territory from those more famous French electronic duos. It’s not dance; nor is it chill out. Babylon By Car could be considered a concept album of sorts in that most of the track titles have a car theme. The main influence here seems to be krautrock, certainly on 'Bearded Lady Motorcycle Club' and 'Overdrive'. The latter swerves all over the place and is probably best not played behind the wheel, unless you want to re-enact Wacky Races. Elsewhere, 'Rue de l’Arsenal' and 'Car Jacked' have a downbeat 80s Italian horror film feel. Vocal tracks are in the minority and deployed to fit with the record’s flow: 'Blue Steel' pits cold electronics against warm vocals from Anna Jean, and the dreamy 'Slow Burn' (vocals by Mark ‘Bogus’ Kerr) is reminiscent of Spiritualized. In fact, that last track almost describes the album; Babylon By Car doesn’t hit immediately, but grows and impresses more with successive listens.
