Stereophonics - Hammersmith Apollo, London
This was the second night at the Apollo for Welsh rockers Stereophonics, organised to mark the re-issue of their first two albums, Word Gets Around and Performance and Cocktails and to celebrate the event they performed the albums in full over the two dates. Tonight was Performance ... night including the relevant b-sides.
The AC/DC classic 'Live Wire' began to play, and the flicker of a white screen soon turned into a video and early images of the band, and their late drummer Stuart Cable. The video got a lot of reaction from crowd and an introduction from Kelly Jones, and a brief speech in memory of Cable, set the emotional tone for the entire evening.
Ending the speech with a ‘Thanks very much for coming’ they lunge straight into their first track of their set list, 'Roll Up And Shine' The floor instantly filled with people dancing and singing along with Jones to every word. Running through the album in order, the momentum continued to build and the excitement in the crowd was getting more intense. You could sense the band were really into the moment, wanting to give as much as they could.
The setlist featured two encores, with 'Sandwiches' in the first taking the venue by storm and 'Dakota' doing the same towards the end. The night climaxed with 'Local Boy', with many in the crowd wanting the night to continue on. You could see how much this show meant to the band and to their fans.
As a testament to the band's longevity and a tribute to Stuart Cable, tonight was a roaring success, the bond between band and audience ever closer still.
