Various - Gilles Peterson: Worldwide
Reflecting the content of Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 show, Worldwide covers everything from jazz to hip-hop to experimental electronica, while straddling, somewhat shakily, the underground and the mainstream. Perhaps the most surprising inclusion, given Peterson's reputation as a specialist DJ, is Amerie’s funky R’n’B hit '1 Thing'. Anyone with a half-decent knowledge of modern music might also recognise early Dizzee Rascal track 'I Luv U' (grimy, maddeningly catchy) and Sebastien Tellier’s classic heartstring tugger 'La Ritournelle'. However, two other gems - José James’ 'The Dreamer' and the Roots Manuva/Cinematic Orchestra collaboration 'All Things To All Men' – are more representative of the prevailing soulful, jazzy tone. Overall, Worldwide is a fine collection.
