The Secret - Solve Et Coagula

The fact that small Italian band The Secret have turned up on Southern Lord might be a surprise to many at first, but just one listen of Solve Et Coagula opener ‘Cross Builder’ will immediately dispel any doubts; the menacing drone is soon accompanied by earth-shaking drums and nefarious growls that darken even the brightest day. But as good as this is, it is all a touch misleading for The Secret show their true colours as ‘Death Alive’ comes hurtling out of the speakers. Thus begins the furious ride through this black metal/hardcore crossover journey that will flatten all in its path. There’s not a moment to breathe until ‘Bell Of Urgency’ with its blackened dirge crawls across the brain as slowly as the previous nine tracks were fast; and so with ‘1968’, Solve Et Coagula decays from the breakneck rattle at its heart to the malignant blackness that pervades and underpins the entire album.
