Maps & Atlases - Perch Patchwork

On this, their debut full length release, Chicago’s Maps & Atlases have expanded the palette from their first two EPs and in the process have created an album fusing lo-fi, folk, americana and off-kilter pop. When it works, as on lead off single ‘Solid Ground’, it is a joy to behold but far too often the songs suffer from a tendency to over egg the arrangements which often fail to let the songs breathe on their own. This is most noticeable on ‘Carrying The Wet Wood’ which would probably be a startling tune if stripped of its extraneous instruments, although keeping the bongos would be a nice touch. A beautiful and subtly orchestrated title track closes the album in style and leaves you with the feeling that, with a little more restraint, this could have been an outstanding album.
