Introducing... Nikita

Since the fall of communism, Poland's influence in Europe has been on the rise. With a rich culture and unique musical influences, we're poised to see Eastern Europe make inroads into the Western audio tapestry and we're all for it. Nikita seems to be leading the charge with her unique pop/trip-hop combo.

What's your earliest musical memory?

My dad's band toured loads when I was small and played to huge audiences so those were very colourful memories. Looking back on it, it must have been such a cute gang - four guys in heavy make up and punk clothes, plus girlfriends, the big tech crew and one white haired baby in a miniature army outfit, bottle heaters et al. We used to roll into hotels and cause a right riot! When I was six we settled just outside Warsaw and I'd come home from school and listen to them rehearsing in the studio in our basement. All around us was this austere, communist eighties world. It's a little like a dream to be honest, my childhood, my memories were very cinematic.

If you could hold a recording session with any five artists, who would you choose?

Ennio Morricone, Henryk Gorecki, Kevin Shields, Kate Bush, Fela Kuti and his band and Mark E Smith with the entire Fall line up ... ;)

That would be some combination!

You want to describe your music to a stranger on the street, who do you compare yourself to?

Oh, I just wouldn't! Would you compare yourself to anyone else? That would have been a torture. I'd just say I do pop music and have loads of influences and try to keep it eclectic, evolve and experiment...

You are going to live on a desert island for a year, which three albums do you take with you?

Music For Airports ,The Stone Roses, The Beatles' White Album ... ah I wouldn't be able to take just three.

If we were to look at your MP3 player, what is the most embarrassing track or album that we'd find?

Haha, that's a good question! Most of tracks on the debut album of my first solo project released back in Poland long time ago... They don't make any sense in English!

What sets you apart from the rest?

I think my background shaped me a lot and I am only getting to realise now what a strange heritage that was. You don't get to grow up with standard values if you're born under communism and into an artistic punk family. That's just asking for trouble isn't it :)

What is next for Nikita?

Finishing the album, the visual artwork, the gigs - I am really looking forward to playing live.
