Aeroplane - We Can't Fly
Coming in the wake of their stunning remix of Friendly Fires’ 'Paris' (actually, not so much a remix as a remake), Aeroplane’s debut album is a disappointment. We Can’t Fly aims to capture an eclectic Balearic spirit but the trouble is these Italians don't always possess the sleight of hand necessary to turn the terminally unhip into ‘cool’. (See Quiet Village’s Silent Movie album for how this sort of thing should be done.) There are a smattering of notable hits: the lead single and title track, an infectious and uplifting slice of cheesy disco-reggae, is one of this summer’s best tunes, while 'Caramellas' is a masterclass in space disco, made for posing and sipping cocktails to. Unfortunately, horrors like the prog-classical 'The Point Of No Return' and the cabaret-styled 'Good Riddance' pour rain on the beach party.
