Neon Circus - Dont Get Panicked
There are some albums you don’t look forward to reviewing; having given the thumbs down to two Neon Circus singles, I aimed to indulge in a spot of pass the parcel with another contributor upon receipt of Don’t Get Panicked but no one would play. Indeed, Neon Circus’ brand of ugly punk-funk, trailed by 'Digit-izm' and continued on tracks like 'Solar Static' and '5 Feet Down', sounds like an inferior, fuzzed-up version of bands such as Happy Mondays and Kasabian. Sadly, there’s around half a dozen of these things here and yet, in places, the album shows surprising promise. The switch to a female vocal on 'Remember' works wonders and is a start at validating the Death In Vegas comparison in the press release. The psychedelic instrumental 'This Way Up' and the mostly vocal free punk-funk of 'Carry The Weight' are additional pointers as to where they might want to focus their efforts next time.
