Fennesz / Daniell / Buck - Knoxville

Knoxville is a document of the meeting of Austrian sound artist Christian Fennesz, ethereal guitarist David Daniell and avant-garde drummer Tony Buck. Recorded live at the Big Ears Festival in 2009, this was the first time this trio had ever played together but mind you, it doesn't show across these four tracks. Percussive chimes mix with scraped guitars, while walls of fuzzy sound build up in the background on opening eight-minute track 'Unuberwindbare Wande' culminating in a cacophonous clatter of sound as everything comes crumbling down. The rest of the album follows much the same template with soothing textures ebbing and flowing and building layer upen layer until the sound threatens to take over your head; closing track 'Diamond Mind' seems to be the pinnacle of this as the drums race around and the other instruments try to force them back. For a first effort this is a surprisingly fully formed beast of droney ambience.
